This is where we'll keep material that's too good to leave out, but that doesn't quite fit one of the other categories.

Teknikens Värld - Berkeley offered as an "exotic car"!!!

B95 Road Test Unearthed

(It was new to me, anyway...)

Lars Henning was good enough to send this road test of a B95 that appeared in the August 1959 issue of Teknikens Värld , a fine Swedish magazine that is still being published. We thank Teknikens Värld for their permission to display it. Click here to see the entire article.

For those of us who don't read Swedish, Lars sent a summary of the article. Briefly, the testers had the following good things to say about the car:

  • Exciting and nimble to drive
  • Good acceleration and top speed
  • Easy to park
  • Low fuel consumption
  • No brake fade
  • Nice direct steering
  • Good road holding except under braking
  • Good driving position if you aren't too big
  • Complete instrument array

And, of course, they had a few things that weren't so good:

  • Reliability problems on both cars tested
  • Very unstable under braking
  • Small, hard to access luggage space
  • Sharp edges that could be dangerous in a collision
  • Ingress/egress, especially with the top up
  • Not well sealed at side screen tops
  • Hard to reach door handles with top up
  • Very noisy
  • No heater (Remember, this was in Sweden)

The "Doctor's View" was that - if you flip it - get thrown out rather than staying in the cockpit.

Acceleration appeared good - about 16 seconds to 100 kph - especially when compared to several other small cars.

The road test summary: A nice toy but not a car to depend on.

In a later issue from the same year, 1959, Teknikens Värld started a series of presentations of "exotic" cars. The second car to be shown was one of the tested Berkeleys. The text says " A sporty car with an engine from a motor-bike, it is a Berkeley. The interior is sportingly spartan but among the instruments you will find a rev counter".

[Lars - Thank you.]
