Berkeleys
were small British sports cars imported into the US from 1957 through 1960. With
a 70 inch wheelbase, it was one of the smallest cars ever marketed here.
Berkeleys were very attractive and reasonably quick, unlike most microcars.
About 4200 were built, of which about 1000 came here.
The cars vanished from the sports car scene as quickly as they appeared. In 1959, several dozen dealers sold Berks. By 1961, the company was defunct and there were no dealers. Of course, enthusiasts continued to drive and race them for as long as parts remained (reasonably) plentiful.
A small number of faithful remain - some have been associated with the cars from the beginning, and some have recently discovered them.
Other sites,
here and abroad, nicely cover the overall history of the make, provide owners
and enthusiasts with forum capabilities, and maintain technical information. I
will not attempt to duplicate these. The purpose of this site is to gather,
organize, and present material related to the history of Berkeleys in the
US, and to provide some technical material not presented elsewhere.
If any of you have pictures, information, memories, or whatever - please jump in. We need pictures, documents, stories, memories, and suggestions. If you can help, please contact us.
